Fae folk compare Fairies to the likes of mosquitos, but on a much larger scale. Fairies are known to be quite temperamental, with an extremely hostile personality. They take pleasure in causing troubles and pains to humans and other Fae folk alike; particularly, they like to bite off the ends of fingers from their targets. 

In large swarms, they act like Piranha, overwhelming their prey, eating them alive, stripping their flesh from their bone in a matter of minutes.

Gnomes are void from these violent antics, the reason is unknown but some say its because the Gnomes “birth” them into the world, via their defense mechanism.
